For example, what makes VCS Technology so exceptional and useful? VCS is a superior, single-channel technology; a patented system for the detection of white and red cell sub-populations. A special flow cytometer combines a fluidic-based sample delivery system with a multi-probe detection system that characterizes cell properties by three independent yet simultaneous measurement probes. The three output signals are combined to three-dimensionally define all cell populations and sub-populations. An open architecture technology, VCS now provides breakthrough analyses such as reticulocyte count, proving that this platform is open-ended and expandable.

VCS

Conductivity

As radio frequency (RF) energy penetrates the cell, information is gathered about the cell size and internal structure.

Scatter

When an unstained cell is struck by a laser beam, the scattered light spreads out in all directions. Using a proprietary new detector, Median Angled Light Scatter (MALS), signals are collected to obtain information about cellular granularity and cell surface structure. The application is primarily used for classifying WBC and reticulocyte sub-populations.

Opacity

By correcting the Conductivity signal so that is is no longer influenced by cell size, we obtain a measurement that is related only to internal structure including nuclear size, density and Nuclear/Cytoplasmic ratio.

Rotated Light Scatter (RLS) – Complex light scatter signals are also influenced by cell size. Like opacity, RLS eliminates cell size from the light scatter signals, providing data that is more specifically related to internal structure.

Other Applications – When a cell is stained or bound with latex spheres coated with specific monoclonal antibodies, these stained or bound cells produce discernible changes in Volume, Conductivity, Opacity and Light Scatter. The AccuGate Technology on the Gen·S System 2 can isolate and quantify these cells. This application is primarily used for reticulocytes and IRF.
